Ultrasonic Shearwave Inspection of Boiler Tube Buttwelds, 1996 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Many mills, per their insurance carriers, inspect boiler tube buttwelds during outages using radiographic (RT) techniques. This requires “inspection windows” to be scheduled. All other work stops and the boiler is evacuated during these periods. This can idle up to 100 people for 4-10 hours at a time. If repairs are required, further delays will occur. The need for additional inspection windows to inspect the repairs can affect the start up or require modifications to the original scope of work Several years ago an Ultrasonic Shearwave Procedure was written to eliminate the inspection windows and work stoppages during outages This paper will outline the process which should be followed to perform this alternative inspection technique. We will discuss the results of the last inspection performed using this method and compare cost estimates and time requirements of the Radiographic and Ultrasonic inspection methods
