Improved technology components can be applied to existing steam turbines to yield performance and operational benefits. These changes are often made with minimum impact on the existing plant facilities and, therefore, can demonstrate favor-able economic benefit at minimum incremental capital cost. Most projects combine the benefits of proven state-of-the-art technology with the advantages inherent to an outage compati-ble installation. This paper reviews the key factors that can influence the economics of existing plant heat balances, and how improved technology components can be incorporated into existing plant steam cycles to yield significant reliability, performance and economic benefits. Two case studies are pre-sented which demonstrate how advanced steam path compo-nents can influence the cost of industrial plant operations.
