More than five years’ operating experience of an atmospheric CHEMREC® black liquor gasifier plant at the AssiDomän Frövifors Mill in Sweden has served as the basis for development and design of North America’s first commercial black liquor gasification plant. The major driving force for the implementation of the 734,000 lb. dry solids per day gasification plant at the Weyerhaeuser, New Bern, North Carolina mill was to provide the incremental recovery capacity to support pulp production increase as part of an overall mill modernization project. This paper will cover the process, design, equipment layout, and the status of North America’s first commercial black liquor gasification plant.
