Pressing of Market Pulp, 1996 Engineering Conference Proceedings

1.1. Pikulik, J.D. McDonald, and D. Gilbert

Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada

Bleached softwood kraft sheets of 800 g/m 2 were pressed in a two-roll press at 100 m/min using four different press felts and a series of temperatures. The solid content of sheets pressed twice with a basket weave felt was about 3% higher than that of sheets pressed twice with a smooth screen. The lowest solids content was obtained with batt-on-mesh felts, which also had the greatest tendency to crush the sheet. The solids content of pressed sheets increased by about 1% for each 12°C increase in the sheet temperature, but the application of steam showers did not enhance the water removal.
