This paper will examine current and on-going field experience in controlling slag and fouling problems in BLRBs by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) computer program in conjunction with chemical injection. The model was used to predict injection points for a chemical reagent that successfully inhibited and reduced slag formation in the superheater and generating bank sections. The boiler had been experiencing fouled gas passes and increasing pressure drops which required shutdowns for cleanings and water washes. The result of this targeted in-furnace injection program is a boiler system that can run longer between shutdowns (due to reduced pressure drops), increase solids loading and operate with improved heat transfer.
