Yankee Lube Systems - Overcoming Contamination Problems Caused by Leaking Steam Joints and Open Gear Cases, 1996 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Farval Lubrication Systems
The physical size of a Yankee dryer creates the first set of drive and sealing problems; with the environment being considerably less than ideal. Chain and open gear drives were tough competitors in reliability and lifetime; but were dangerous and took up a lot of space. When using semi-enclosed gearing; with driveshaft delivered steam entering the oil system; and with breathing gearcases sucking in moisture; there is more than normal water and particulate ingress. Because of the environment; standard lube system practices are typically inadequate.
