Feasibility and Limitations of Life Extensions and Capacity Incresases in Chemical Recovery Boilers, 1997 Engineering Conference Proceedings

There are approximately 280 operating recovery boilers in the USA and Canada. The average age of these units is approximately 23 years. ‘Average capacity is 1100 Mt DS/day (2.5 MM lb DS/day). Many of these units have undergone various retrofits for increased capacity and life extension. As the population of boilers ages and the requirement for incremental capacity increases, there continues to be a major interest in the pulping industry to extend the life of operating units. The following questions come to mind. How old can a recovery boiler be? What is its maximum capacity? Is it economical to operate many small units, compared to one new? The intent of this paper is to highlight the typical bottlenecks of recovery boilers, and provide guidance on how to evaluate the remaining available capacity.
