Feedwater Improvements Pay Dividends by Lengthening Time Between Turbine Outages, 1997 Engineering Conference Proceedings

During a 1994 outage, Stone Container Corporation’s Snowflake Mill found deposits on their turbine that raised concerns about mill steam purity. Analysis showed the most likely source of the deposits to be the demineralizer and the condenser. Based on this evidence the turbine manufacturer and the insurer recommended a stepped up turbine overhaul schedule and more frequent inspections.

This paper discusses how the mill set out to remove the sources of the deposits. Improvements at the mill included instillation of a packed bed cation polisher, improved monitoring of feedwater chemistry, and training of operators. Improvements in steam purity have resulted in new recommendations by the turbine manufacturer and the insurer that allow the mill to extend the time between major turbine outages.
