A significant corrosion concern in the manufacture of paper is the premature failure of all machine rolls, but especially suction press rolls. This concern arises because of
i) the great expense of suction press rolls (suction rolls for large paper machines can cost more than $500,000)
ii) the need to keep a spare roll for replacement in case of failure
iii) the time required for replacement and the corresponding downtime
iv) the potential for secondary damage to other parts of a paper machine.
Suction press rolls are subject to several corrosion-related mechanisms, including corrosion fatigue, erosion-corrosion, intergranular corrosion, pitting and attendant surface roughening, and corrosion by cleaning solutions, depending on the material. Corrosion fatigue usually is the greatest concern, especially with stainless steel shells.
Roll design and fabrication quality are also key factors affecting suction roll life.
