Computer Technology's Impact on Safety in Pulp & Paper Mills, 1997 Engineering Conference Proceedings
Computers and computer based technologies have had profound effects on the operation and profitability of P&P mills and the processes operating within them. Major improvements have been made toward optimizing the yield, efficiency and control of mill processes. These range from raw material supply through inventory control, training, actual operation and on to the eventual distribution and consumption of the mills’ products. Has the computer’s potential contribution to safety been neglected during the quest for process optimization? Perhaps, the eagerness to automate and computerize has led to compromises in safety for both employees and process equipment. Experience and case histories to date support both sides of this debate.
