Dryer Section Expert System for Dynamic Optimization of the Paper Machine, 1998 Engineering Conference Proceedings

Dynamic optimization of the dryer and press sections can be achieved with an on-line dryer expert system (DES) which uses a new approach to follow and optimize complex processes. The DES analyzes the process at the press, dryers, steam and condensate system, dryer hood, and the vacuum system. The program collects real time data through a process input data collection system and executes a variety of multi-variable calculations. When operating conditions change and performance drops below the benchmark, the DES sends an alarm and issues a diagnostic report explaining how the problem can be corrected. Production increases and cost savings are realized via maximized dryer capacity and longer press fabric life. Machine nmnability is improved by optimizing the hood and pocket air temperatures, draw optimization and curl control among other variables.
