Black Liquor Gasification - Experiences at Weyerhauser, New Bern, 1998 Engineering Conference Proceedings

The first commercial black liquor gasification plant in North America started up in December, 1996 at Weyerhaeuser’s pulp mill at New Bern, NC. Since the startup of the new fiber line at the facility in September of 1997, the CHEMREC gasifier has helped satisfy the mill’s incremental production requirements. This discussion will review the plant design and present the operating experience since startup. As a new technology, the gasifier has presented many technical challenges. The supplier and mill team have worked together to overcome several of these and plans are in place to address the rest.
