Pinch Analysis Reveals Potential at International Falls Mill, 1998 Engineering Conference Proceedings

The Boise Cascade mill at International Falls Minnesota is an integrated pulp and paper mill producing 1500 T/D of finished paper.

The mill was highly energy efficient prior to the beginning of the study.

The application of pinch technology, simulation modeling and mill experience revealed practical projects that could save an additional 12% of the total energy used, while at the same time reducing cooling load. Process integration analysis revealed opportunity for an increase of 50,000 lb/h in evaporation without additional energy consumption.

Cooperation between mill personnel, utility representatives and consultants ensured that the mill has a clear decision tree about the long term energy pathways so that energy saving projects can either be implemented independently or combined with other mill future plans.
