My TAPPI Story: Eupidio Scopel
The transfer of fluids in industry is the largest single use of energy worldwide, and the Pulp & Paper Industry moves significant quantities of water as an essential ingredient in the paper making process. The pumps associated with this industry suffer more than most, particularly in the recycling sector where they have to handle everything from grit to steel staples and paperclips, and it is not unusual to find them being replaced on a regular basis. Other critical pieces of equipment that suffer from the cycle of erosion/corrosion are multiple effect evaporators, lumber transfer rolls, primary fan pumps, dryer journal shafts, and chipper disc pockets. Conventional repairs can result in significant downtime losses and reduction in plant efficiency. Alternative repairs, consisting of high-performance polymeric repair materials, have been used to successfully minimize the problems associated with erosion/corrosion, in turn saving these facilities millions of dollars.
