My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Pulp mills throughout the world are striving to reduce effluent discharges and minimize the loss of black liquor solids through enhanced spill collection plans and improved pulp washing. All of these mills have seen chloride and potassium concentrations rise throughout the recovery cycle as these silent purges are closed. The resulting impact to operations has been severe with recovery boilers requiring off-line washing, excessive steam consumed in soot blowing, lost production, and even corrosion to equipment in the liquor cycle. Chloride and potassium removal is a critical portion of any process to recycle ECF bleach plant filtrates. The technology applied to enable recycling these bleach plant filtrates is likewise very applicable to a mill experiencing or anticipating elevated chloride and potassium concentrations.
