My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Advances in press technology in recent years have led to significant increases in maximum nip pressures and dwell times. Shoe presses and jumbo presses have yielded big gains in both sheet dryness and sheet strength properties. The most promising area of future development in pressing is now in further raising the web temperature in the nip. This paper will discuss a project seeking to develop reliable heated press roll technology. The project includes the development of a highly durable new roll coating that will allow release of a wet paper web from the heated roll surface at web temperatures in excess of 95 degrees C (200 degrees F). In order to reach these web temperatures, an electrically heated thermal fluid system is used to heat the press roll. This roll heating technology has been used to heat paper calender rolls, but has not previously been applied to large diameter rolls, or used to heat a wet web.
