A non-cooled smelt spout has been developed for use in chemical recovery boilers to replace the traditional water-
cooled spout. The benefits and features of the DrySpout TM as well as the operating experience gained during the last
five (5) years of in-service operation are highlighted. This design of DrySpout TM has been used in a wide range of
recovery boilers. The experience has resulted in the development of seven (7) new refinements to the original spout
configuration, which have been incorporated into the next generation design starting in July 2000. These changes
improve the operational life of the spouts and will be illustrated.
The paper will focus on the design process, key details and latest refinements to the spout assembly. The specific
benefits directly related to these design changes are highlighted and summarized.
