Understanding Deposit Removal Process in Recovery Boilers, 2001 Engineering / Finishing & Converting Conference Proceedings

A. Kaliazine, H. Tran, D. E. Cormack--The accumulation of fireside deposits on the heat transfer surfaces in kraft recovery boilers causes serious problems in kraft pulp mills. The principal means of on-line deposit removal is sootblowers, which periodically blast deposits with high-pressure steam. The paper presents an overview of the research on deposit removal by sootblowers conducted at the University of Toronto during recent years. The research involved the investigation of removal mechanisms, nozzle design, jet aerodynamics and deposit properties. The criteria for deposit removal were developed based on laboratory experiments and theoretical analysis.
