Proper inspection is essential to the detection of cracks in composite tubes at primary air port openings. Surface preparation using flapper wheels or sanding discs is a prerequisite prior to nondestructive testing using color- contrast liquid penetrant. Cracks may be either mosaic or circumferential in orientation. Almost all of the cracks have been found in the membranes and composite tubes at the bottom half of the air port openings, not farther than 4 inches (10 cm) below the termination of the membrane beneath the opening. Both circumferential and mosaic cracking can progress through the stainless steel tube cladding into the underlying carbon steel.
