New Portable Sensor Technology Designed to Measure Various Paper Machine Velocities, 1999 Engineering Conference Proceedings
With the increasing complexities of today’s paper machines and the need to achieve very high operating efficiencies,
it has become critical to know the true velocities of all paper machine components. Up until now, measuring these
velocities has been achieved with limited accuracy by using indirect measurement information, such as pressure
transducers and rotational counters.
New developments in laser based non-contacting, non-intrusive measurement technology have now made it possible
to produce a lightweight, portable sensor (such as the Dantec SensorLine) capable of measuring all moving object
velocities, from liquids to solids, at high accuracy. It has proven to provide a powerful means of verifying the jet-towire
speed, and all roll & fabric speeds from the press section to the reel. Furthermore it can be used to measure the
exact paper length at the reel and winder.
