On-Line Formation Measurement: A Key Factor Affecting Paper Quality, 1999 Engineering Conference Proceedings

This paper presents an overview of an on-line device that is suitable for the measurement and subsequent analysis of structural variations inherent in machine made paper. These variations are detected using optical sensors which have an array of high resolution sensing heads located at fixed positions across the sheet. By comparing the outputs from one-dimensional (1D) sensors at different CD spacings it is possible to determine two-dimensional (2D) characteristics of the defects without the explosion of data currently generated by true 2D sensors. The paper describes the equipment architecture and operation and explains the analytical processes used to provide the papermaker with practical information. Results obtained from trials at a paper mill are presented and demonstrate how the device can be used to assist with wet end optimisation.
