Laboratory Evaluation of Trickling Biofiltration for Treatment of Kraft Mill Noncombustion Air Emissions, 2000 Environmental Conference Proceedings

- L. Allen, S. Ellis -- We evaluated laboratory-scale trickling biofilter for treatment of simulated kraft brownstock air emissions, using kraft mill secondary sludge as the biological consortium. We devised a rapid method of attaching the sludge to the plastic packing material, which permitted full startup within 3-24 hours. A trickling biofilter with sludge on plastic pall rings removed 80-90% of the TRS gases (as H2S) and 95% of the methanol from a simulated brownstock dilute noncondensible gas (DNCG). Use of sludge and the rapid attachment method resulted in faster acclimation of the system than is customary with trickling biofilters. Preliminary cost estimates suggest that trickling biofiltration may be competitive with conventional DNCG collection and incineration. Some technical issues remain to be addressed.
