My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
- R. Kenny, S. Almost, J. Hicks -- Pulp and paper aerated stabilization basins (ASB's) are often inadequately monitored and controlled as compared to activated sludge plants. There is often minimal monitoring and testing due to the perceived forgiving nature of aerated lagoons. Although ASB's are often not well understood they are complex biological systems requiring significant technical attention. Mechanisms responsible for elevated total suspended solid (TSS) and final effluent toxicity are examined based upon microbiology, growth pressure fundamentals, routine/non-routine testing and monitoring in combination with practical operating experiences at various ASB's. The ASB operating experiences of three ASB's and mechanisms responsible for elevated TSS and final effluent toxicity are also reviewed.
