Optimization of a Recycle Linerboard Mill WWTP, 2000 Environmental Conference Proceedings

- M. Barnack, R. Stein, L. Gellner -- Gaylord Container Corporation operates a recycle linerboard mill in Antioch, California. The wastewater from the mill is treated in an on-site biological wastewater treatment plant. Gaylord experienced difficulties in maintaining optimum performance of the treatment plant because of increases and changes in plant production. AWARE Environmental Inc. (AEI) was retained by Gaylord to assist in improving the operation and performance of the WWTP. Based on a review of historical data and information gathered during site visits, it appeared that the wastewater was deficient in nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and contained high concentrations of influent solids. In order to improve treatment performance, Gaylord increased the addition of phosphoric acid and began adding urea to the equalization basin in order to increase nutrient levels. Screening equipment was upgraded and polymer addition in the primary clarifier was flow-paced to improve primary solids removal. The treatment plant capacity was increased by utilizing the equalization/surge basin for additional biological treatment. These modifications along with increased performance monitoring, have significantly improved the treatment plant and have increased the capacity of the WWTP to handle increases and changes in production.
