Chervenak -- Biocidal chemicals are highly reactive species that are quickly transformed upon introduction into an industrial system; the traditional idea of mass balance ("what goes in must come out") is therefore not necessarily relevant to a discussion of the environmental fate of biocides. The perceived disappearance of oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocides is generally the result of biocidal interaction with existing chemicals or reaction with contaminants and organic load in the system. Unreacted biocide may also be discharged from the system, but the chance for environmental exposure is nearly nonexistent.
