Dorrington -- Pulp and paper mills are preventing effluent toxicity by putting in place environmental screens at the purchasing level, operational controls, environmental training, and Toxicity Prevention and Remediation Plans. Acute toxicity of treated effluents can be due to mill operations and variables unrelated to mill operations such as sampling and testing methods, characteristics and health of the test organisms, and laboratory quality assurance and quality control. Given the potential legal consequences and negative public perception related to effluents being labeled as "toxic", recommendations are made for preventing regulatory test failures and obtaining more reliable toxicity test results. The Effluent Toxicity Prevention and Remediation Plan also outlines a systematic approach to identifying the cause of effluent toxicity. The preventative and responsive measures demonstrate due diligence.
