Kraft Mill Odor Monitoring and Operational Results, 2000 Environmental Conference Proceedings
- S. Olendorf, K. Jacobi, D. Bonistall -- A kraft pulp and paper mill shares its experiences with minimizing odor impacts on the community. The mill organized an "Odor Task Force" to identify intermittent odor sources and develop and implement cost effective solutions to minimize odor impacts on the community. The team worked to develop informational tools, made physical process changes, made changes in operating procedures, and developed a tracking system to measure progress within the community. "Real time" odor-indicating parameters were developed to track sources. The Odor Task Force identified several sources that contribute to odor, including pulping process combustion stacks, storage tanks, pulping process fugitives, and the wastewater treatment facility. This paper describes information tools the Odor Task Force uses to manage odor, a description of some of the odor sources, and steps taken to minimize impact on the community. Substantial improvements have been made at an already "low odor" mill by this team.
