Andrew Watson, Robert Goggins, David Hunniford, Brady Overton, Stephen Huza--In June 2000, a full scale evaluation of USFilter’s BIOXIDEÒ process for eliminating dissolved hydrogen sulfide and other reduced sulfur odor causing compounds, from wastewater was initiated at Georgia-Pacific’s Port Edwards, WI facility. This trial was conducted on a wastewater lagoon, which receives 60.6 million liters/day (16 MGD), of Nekoosa mill primary clarifier effluent wastewater. The Nekoosa lagoon contained a significant level of solids and generated hydrogen sulfide at concentrations up to 30 mg/L during the summer months. This source of hydrogen sulfide emissions significantly contributed to odor complaints.
Within one week of initiating the patented biological treatment process, dissolved sulfide levels in the lagoon were reduced from 15-20 mg/L to non-detectable (< 0.1="" mg/l).="" elimination="" of="" dissolved="" sulfides="" from="" the="" lagoon="" significantly="" reduced="" offsite="" odor="" complaints="" and="" justified="" continuous="" dosing="" of="" the="" lagoon="" to="" maintain="" the="" odor="" control="" performance="" achieved="" during="" the="">
