Organic Emissions from Lumber Dry Kilns, Small- and Large-Scale, 2001 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Michael R. Milota--VOC and HAP emissions from several species of lumber were measured in a lab kiln: southern pine, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, and white fir. These are compared to mill measurements on matched wood for three of the species. The trends in the values with time as well as variability among tests are discussed. In general the small-scale kiln is a good surrogate for large-scale dryers, although the small kiln does dry the wood faster. It is much easier to make measurements using the small kiln.
