Experiences with Hard Piping of "Foul" Condensate, 2001 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Al Beshire, Dan Kunde, Robert Sackellares--Georgia-Pacific Corporation conducted a study to demonstrate the validity of the "hard-piping" option. This option is one way to meet the Cluster Rule’s Maximum Achievable Control Technology Standards for process equipment. These standards are commonly called MACT I requirements. Toledo was chosen as the study site. The study began in 1997. We concluded that the technology was viable and installed the system in November 1998. A performance trial was conducted in February and March 1999. This trial simulated MACT’s Initial Performance Test. The test data showed that we are collecting 9 pounds of methanol per ton of Kraft pulp. The fraction of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) biodegraded is called f(bio). This fraction averaged 96.2%. It ranged from 94.2-97.5. We showed that we could achieve the minimum f(bio) if we operate at least thirteen aerators.
