Moving Bed Bio-Reactor Pilot System at Irving Pulp & Paper, Ltd., 2001 Environmental Conference Proceedings
David Embley--A single stage, Moving Bed Bio-reactor (MBB) pilot system was evaluated on ECF bleached kraft effluent at Irving Pulp & Paper Ltd. for its feasibility in the reduction of COD and BOD5 at both mesophillic and thermophillic operating conditions. Trials were performed over a ten month time frame varying the temperature, pH and retention time in the reactor to determine the optimum process conditions.
The moving bed bio-reactor has proved to be effective in removing COD and BOD5 from the bleached effluent stream at both 38 C (100 F) and 57-65 C (135-50 F) provided there is sufficient retention time. The operation of the pilot plant, the reactor conditions and the resulting changes in the bleached kraft effluent parameters are discussed in this paper.
