Regenerative Thermal Oxydation of Reduced Sulfur Emission from Kraft Pulping, 2001 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Jean J.O. Gravel, Guy Drouin--Environmental requirements for reduced emissions of total reduced sulfur (TRS) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the emissions from pulping operations are leading to dedicated incinerator of high destruction efficiency and thermal performance.

The first installation in Canada of a regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) was placed in service early in 1997 at a kraft pulp mill in the Quebec province. Tests have shown a reduction of 99.6% in the TRS with a thermal factor of 88.5% in the RTO. 1t can be considered as the best method to comply with the new norms for the TRS atmospheric emissions in the pulp and paper industry.

The operating experience of four years demonstrate a viable and effective process.
