Assessment and Remediation of Heating Oil Contamination in a Shallow Aquifier at the Stone Container Corporation Facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings

This paper describes the actions taken for the assessment and remediation of the loss of an unknown amount of heating oil from an underground storage tank system at the Stone Container Corporation facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The loss of the heating oil resulted in the contamination of a portion of the shallow aquifer that is the major water source for the City of Sioux Falls. The assessment involved the use of groundwater monitoring wells and chemical analysis. The remediation utilizes groundwater gradient control techniques for the collection and recovery of the lost heating oil.
