Gas Recovery at an Industrial Landfill for the Purpose of OOOA Abatement, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The Boise Cascade Moonlight Rock Industrial Landfill started experiencing objectionable odors in its vicinity about 4 years ago. A gas study attributed the odors to the landfill which prompted Boise Cascade to seek solutions to the odor problem. Hydrogen Sulphide gas was determined to be the gas causing most of the odors.

Total recovery of The landfill gas was determined to be the only solution to the odor problem. This was accomplished with an HOPE 60 mil. cover and a gas recovery system. The gas is being disposed of in a groundflare .

Along with odor reduction, leachate reduction from the landfill has been accomplished by integrating a rain water diversion system with a leachate collection system using the 60 mil HOPE liner as a barrier.

Preliminary results of the system show that the gas disposal system has been effective in reducing odors as well as reducing leachate caused by rainwater in filtration.
