Disaster Drills a Vital Part of Emergency Preparedness, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings
As we prepare our facilities to avoid and control potential disasters, we are faced with a problem which hinders our preparedness. We can attend schools to gain knowledge, and we can purchase the necessary equipment, but we have a strong tendency to avoid having the type of emergencies at our facilities which provide the experience factor necessary to control a disaster. Emergency drills are therefore a vital part of a mill’s disaster preparation. They not only test your readiness, but provide for the gaining of experience within a controlled environment. This paper deals with the coordination, planning and execution of an actual disaster drill which involved a mill’s emergency response organization, the county’s office of public safety, the county’s rescue service, one professional and two volunteer fire departments, the sheriff’s office, and a local hospital.
