Nutrients and Temperture Affect Effluent Suspended Solids, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Operating experience at the Boise Cascade mill in Wallula, Washington, has shown that many cases of increased effluent TSS discharge may be caused by nutrient limitations, wastewater temperature, or a combination of both. Minimum nutrient addition guidelines were established for nitrogen and phosphorus based upon the quantity of BOD5 removed. Residual nutrient concentrations were found to be a convenient way to monitor nutrient addition. Decreasing wastewater temperatures reduce the endogenous decay rate of the bacteria which results in a net increase in the amount of bacterial sludge produced, and an increased demand for added nutrients, High wastewater temperatures may also increase the effluent TSS discharge by causing changes in the diversity of the biological population, or by causing changes in the biomass physiology unrelated to cell yield and decay.
