My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
A monitoring procedure using a Foxboro Miran IA (miniature infrared analyzer) has been developed by Du Pont and used to monitor chloroform in bleach plant vents. This on-line monitoring procedure measures real-time chloroform concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 5000 ppm.
Development of the monitoring method is described as well as procedures for using the method to determine chloroform emissions from bleach plants. Results from several mill applications are presented, including measurements made before and after changes to the bleach sequence.
Our monitoring results with this method have consistently shown that chloroform emissions are reduced about 80% when hypochlorite is eliminated from the bleach sequence.
