Current State of the Development of Marine and Estuarine Bioassays for Application in Discharge Permits, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings
Parallel to the current emphasis being placed on the application of freshwater chronic bioassays to effluent discharge permits has been an effort to develop bioassay tests for application to marine and estuarine discharges. A review is provided of bioassay procedures which have been developed or which are under consideration by the EPA or other regulatory agencies for the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. The criteria for organism selection and test acceptability are discussed as well as the need for adequate quality assurance data. A description is provided of NCASI’s marine bioassay program, which is designed to determine the technical soundness of various proposed bioassays and to determine their suitability for use with pulp and paper mill effluents. The current status of the application of marine bioassays in various coastal states is also reviewed.
