Dibenzofuran and Dibenzodioxin in Defoamers, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings

In 1985, measurable quantities of 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-dibenzofuran (TCDF) and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) were detected in fish downstream from a paper mill. These chemicals were subsequently traced to the mill’s effluent. As a result of this finding, a joint study was carried out by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Council of the Paper Industry for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) at five paper mills between June, 1986 and January, 1987. The results of this study were reported in May, 1988. There were a number of conclusions from this study, one of which was that TCDF and TCDD were formed during the bleaching process.
