AOX Reduction in Bleach Plant Effluent Using Enhanced Oxidation, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The use of second generation enhanced oxidation processing (EOP) designed to reduce chlorinated phenolics (AOX) in bleach plant effluent to the proposed 1991 and 1994 Canadian AOX discharge levels is described. Mill trials, using mobile demonstration scale equipment were conducted in order to optimize treatment alternatives under varying production conditions. Appropriate amounts of high intensity ultraviolet light together with chemical oxidants (ozone and hydrogen peroxide) were applied to reliably reduce influent AOX levels from 3.5-4.0 Kg/tonne to 2.5 and 1.5 Kg/tonne. Effluent colour was coincidentally reduced to less than 100 PCU. Preliminary operating cost and capital investment implications for an EOP-based AOX reduction alternative are presented.
