My TAPPI Story: Eupidio Scopel
Chlorine-free bleaching is the most attractive bleaching process at the present time. Recently, the nitrosation pretreatment using nitrosyl sulfuric acid (NSA) before oxygen delignification had been successfully proved significantly reducing chlorine in bleaching (17,18) through the collaborating research. The objectives of this study are to find an alternative
lower cost nitrosating agent which has an equally pretreatment performance of the pulp as the nitrosyl sulfuric acid and to eliminate the chlorine in the bleaching sequence with an acceptable handsheet property.
Three types of sulfite pulp were investigated and they were produced from n-O-D, O-D, and n-D bleaching sequence respectively. In addition, four types of kraft pulp were investigated and they were produced from the n-Eo-D-E-D and Eo-D-E-D bleaching sequence with each sequence at two different Eo temperatures (70°C and 90°C). All bleached pulps were not subject to beating.
