Landfill and Leachate Treatment Design, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Georgia-Pacific’s Woodland, Maine mill required an expansion of their existing solid waste landfill. As part of the upgrade, the landfill expansion was designed and constructed with a composite liner consisting of a 90-cm recompacted soil liner overlain with a 2-mm HDPE liner. Operating costs and gravel usage were reduced from the existing operating method by the use of vertical leachate drains to improve dewatering of the sludge. Leachate treatment was managed by converting the existing leachate treatment facility to storage ponds and pumping the leachate to the mill for processing. An on-site geotechnical laboratory was established to reduce turnaround time for liner conformance testing and thereby accelerate the construction schedule.
