My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
The existing solid waste landfill at Weyerhaeuser Paper Company’s Plymouth, North Carolina Mill was nearing its permitted capacity in late 1988. While evaluating options for future disposal needs, the concept of a vertical expansion and phased closure of the existing facility was selected. This approach has provided the Mill time to design, permit, and construct a new long-term solid waste landfill on Mill property adjacent to the existing site.
During 1989, design plans and a permit application for the vertical expansion/closure were prepared and submitted to the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources (NCDEHNR). A permit to construct and operate was received in January, 1990.
