New Fiber Line Control Concept Minimizes Environmental Concerns, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Application of a pulp lignin measurement system for control of kraft and sulphite pulp fiberlines has provided optimum delignification results. Benefits have been documented in improved fiberline operations, reduced bleach chemical usage(particularly chlorine) and reduced off quality pulp. By establishing a chlorine multiple target and controlling to it the development of chlorinated organic compounds in the bleach plant effluent and dioxin content in the pulp may be stabilized at a low level. Over 40 applications control medium and high consistency oxygen reactors, conventional bleaching operations with varying substitution levels and digester operations, both batch and continuous. The system also provides two additional measurements for fiberline management; dissolved lignin in pulping liquor is used for evaluating and control of washing and fiber size for indicating species transitions.
