Talking About Toxics - Presenting the Risk Numbers, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings
Environmental managers at mills are increasingly becoming involved in communicating with the community about the environmental risks posed by their facilities. This paper uses key concepts from the risk communication literature, primarily work performed by V. Covello, P. Slovic, and P. Sandman and his research associates at Rutgers University, and adapts them to situations within a mill community. The discussion offers suggestions for presenting risk data, using risk comparisons, and implementing strategies to enhance a mill’s credibility within a community.
