Crisis Communications in the ERA of 'Right to Know', 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings
Perhaps the first rule of crisis management is to know when you’ve got one. This is less glib than it sounds: striking the balance between overreacting and underreacting can critically affect your company’s ability to respond to a crisis situation and to manage its consequences. The same holds true for the communications component of crisis management, a component that is increasingly important in the era of "Right to Know."
As this audience knows from experience, it is no longer sufficient simply to do the right thing, in an operational sense, to respond to a crisis event. At the same time, your company must satisfy the many stakeholders to whom it is accountable -- any one of which could put you out of business if its concerns are not properly addressed.
