Utilization of Primary Clarifier Sludge as an Agricultural Lime Substitute, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

A primary clarifier sludge land application program was initiated by Pope & Talbot, Inc., in January 1991. TCLP testing showed non-detectable results so the sludge was not considered to be a hazardous waste. Chemical analysis of the sludge indicated that it had substantial value as a lime substitute. The application rates were fixed at from 16 - 24 dry tons per acre for maximum lime benefit, depending on soil pH. Farmer acceptance has been favorable -- provided that Pope & Talbot supply the additional nitrogen needed during the first growing season. Both calculated and actual measured dioxin levels after soil incorporation are no different than natural background.
