My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The field testing of the MTCI gasifier using the mill sludge from a cardboard recycle mill in Southern California mill is being carried out at a nominal capacity of 20 T/D. The gasifier employs a novel indirect heating method using a pulse combustor fired either by natural gas or process fuel gas. This gasification process produces medium Btu gas that can be used in duct burners, gas turbines or in boilers. The pulse combustor heaters have a very high heat transfer rate and discharge relatively clean flue gas with less than 30 ppm NOx at 3% 02.
This project is funded by the United States Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission. This process promises not only reduction in the landfill costs but also potential reduction in NO, emissions from the mill. This paper presents the progress of the field test program.
