Phosphorus Removal in an Activated Sludge Plant, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

In an effort to meet a stringent phosphorus limit, MPC began to perform pilot scale and full scale experiments to remove phosphorus in its activated sludge plant. Pilot scale studies were performed to determine which metal salts would be effective in reacting with the ortho-phosphate ion at dosage levels which would not violate water quality based pH limits.

Full scale studies were performed for phosphorus removal in the aeration basin as part of secondary treatment. Salt dosages and ortho-phosphate binding was traced throughtout the basin. Full scale studies were also performed for phosphorus removal as tertiary treatment. Salts dosages and ortho-phosphate removal in a dissovled air floatation/filter was monitored and evaluated.
