My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Protocols have been developed to provide quantitative data for classes of target compounds (base neutrals, phenolics, and acids) and organohalogen parameters (AOX, EOX, TOX) in treatment system and recipient media (aqueous phase, sediments, biota) of bleached kraft pulp and paper mills. This paper outlines methodology for the analysis of free extractable organics in sediment and biota samples.
Organic constituents were Dean-Stark soxhlet extracted with hexane/isopropanol. Subsequent selective separation and derivatisation steps gave fractions suitable for the analysis of extractable organic halogen, base neutral, phenolic, and acidic compounds from a single extraction. Target compounds were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Recovery and reproducibility data are presented for the protocol.
